Tunisia out of World Cup despite shock win against France

Tunisia produced one of the greatest results in their footballing history on Wednesday, defeating reigning world champions France 1-0 at the Education City Stadium. Despite the euphoric scenes on the pitch, the victory was tinged with sadness as the Carthage Eagles were eliminated from the tournament.

The result was not enough to overcome the standings in Group D. Australia managed to secure a 1-0 win against Denmark in a simultaneous fixture, meaning the Socceroos claimed the second qualifying spot behind France, who topped the group on goal difference.

Khazri Delivers the Knockout Blow

Wahbi Khazri, who was born in France and plays in Ligue 1, was the hero of the night. In the 58th minute, he capitalised on a disjointed French midfield, driving through the defence and sliding a composed finish past goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.

Reflecting on the bittersweet exit, Khazri noted the pain of relying on external factors. "Unfortunately, in football it is better not to have to rely on others for results but we can go out with our heads held high," the captain stated after the final whistle.

France’s Second String Struggles

With a place in the last 16 already guaranteed, France coach Didier Deschamps opted to rotate his squad heavily. He made nine changes to his starting lineup, handing debuts and rare starts to several fringe players, including Randal Kolo Muani and Axel Disasi.

The experimental side lacked rhythm and struggled to contain the motivated Tunisians. Deschamps admitted that the high volume of changes made the game difficult, but defended the decision as a necessary step to keep his primary stars fresh for the next round.

Late Drama and VAR Controversy

Deschamps eventually introduced Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann in a desperate attempt to rescue a point. It appeared they had succeeded in the dying seconds when Griezmann volleyed home an equaliser deep into injury time.

However, the goal was dramatically overturned following a VAR review for offside. The decision preserved Tunisia's first-ever win against European opposition at a World Cup, even if it wasn't enough to extend their stay in Qatar.
