Malawi police arrest 32-year-old man who stole South African's Nissan Navara in Lilongwe

Authorities in Lilongwe have apprehended 32-year-old Blessings Mbalangwe following the alleged theft of a vehicle belonging to a South African traveler. The victim, Nkosinathi Mathebula, had driven from South Africa to Malawi to seek spiritual assistance for a sick relative.

The two men were reportedly staying at a guest house in the Kaphiri region. While Mathebula was asleep, Mbalangwe allegedly took the keys to a Gauteng-registered Nissan Navara double cab and drove off, heading toward the Dowa district.

Community Tip Leads to Recovery

Police spokesperson Sub-Inspector Foster Benjamin confirmed that the theft was thwarted by vigilant residents in Nyemba village. Local community members noticed the suspicious presence of the vehicle and immediately notified law enforcement.

Acting on this intelligence, investigators from Dowa tracked the bakkie to Mbalangwe’s family home. The vehicle was recovered and handed over to the Lilongwe Anti-Motor Vehicle Theft Squad for further processing.

Suspect Faces Court Action

Mbalangwe was eventually located and detained in Lilongwe. He now faces formal charges of grand auto theft and is expected to appear before the Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court to answer for the crime.

The incident has gained significant traction on social media, with many South Africans commending the Malawian police for their swift action. The recovery of the South African vehicle has been hailed as a success for cross-border law enforcement cooperation.
