South Africa and Nigeria pledge closer cooperation on migration and organised crime issues

South Africa and Nigeria have committed to a new era of bilateral cooperation following high-level diplomatic discussions in Abuja. International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola visited the Nigerian capital as a Special Envoy for President Cyril Ramaphosa to deliver a strategic message to President Bola Tinubu.

The meeting aimed to address recent friction between the two African powerhouses. Both nations agreed to work together more closely on regional security, managing migration, and dismantling organised crime networks that operate across borders.

Addressing Crime and Profiling Concerns

During the talks, Lamola addressed the recent arrest and processing of over 500 Nigerian nationals in South Africa. He clarified that these law enforcement actions are based strictly on evidence and individual criminal behavior rather than ethnic profiling.

The Minister emphasized that law-abiding Nigerians living in South Africa are not targets of state operations. He reiterated the government's firm stance against xenophobia, following international concerns regarding hate speech and anti-migrant demonstrations.

Mass Repatriation and Compensation

The diplomatic strain saw Nigeria launch a voluntary repatriation project, resulting in approximately 1,500 citizens returning home from South Africa. South African authorities assisted the process by granting immigration waivers for those who had overstayed their visas.

Returning citizens arrived in Lagos on 24 June 2026, where they were met with financial stipends and support packages approved by President Tinubu. The Nigerian government has indicated it will seek financial compensation from Pretoria for businesses and assets lost during recent unrest.

A Path Toward Diplomacy

Both governments have pledged to resolve their grievances through structured security channels and diplomatic dialogue. The focus remains on preventing further escalation and ensuring the safety of all citizens within their respective borders.
