Nnete Leotlela: BackaBuddy raises R112,785 for boy mauled by 5 dogs in Maseru

The community has rallied behind 12-year-old Nnete Leotlela, a young boy from Maseru who is currently fighting for his life in the intensive care unit. The youngster was victim to a horrific attack by five German Shepherds on 6 July in the Ha Abia area.

The incident occurred when Nnete went to pick up his younger sibling from an after-care facility. He mistakenly entered the wrong property after ringing the intercom, where he was immediately set upon by the pack of dogs.

Extensive Injuries and Resilience

The injuries sustained during the mauling were devastating. Nnete lost both of his ears and his lower lip, and he suffered severe damage to his scalp. Despite the physical and psychological trauma, his aunt, Maiketso Titisi, says he is showing incredible strength.

Currently, the boy is communicating with his family through writing as he undergoes intensive physiotherapy. While he still suffers from distressing flashbacks, his family describes his spirit as resilient as he cooperates with his medical team.

A Global Push for Recovery Funds

With the family's medical aid nearing its limit, a BackaBuddy campaign was launched by Limpho Tsasanyane to help cover the mounting costs. So far, the initiative has raised R112,785 toward a R500,000 goal, supported by over 180 donors worldwide.

Donors like Ntebaleng Leluka and Shantell Tswatswa have shared messages of hope on the platform. The funds are earmarked for a long series of reconstructive surgeries and mental health support to help Nnete return to his dream of becoming a biochemist.

Legal Action Pending

The family has confirmed their intention to file formal charges against the owner of the property where the attack took place. Details regarding the owner's identity have not yet been released to the public.

Before his life was upended by this tragedy, Nnete was known as an energetic child with a love for basketball, reading, and cooking. The public is encouraged to continue donating as the road to his full recovery is expected to be both long and expensive.
