SAPS pays tribute to fallen anti-gang officers killed in Reigerpark

The South African Police Service (SAPS) held a solemn memorial service in Westdene, Johannesburg, on August 12, 2026. The gathering paid tribute to Constable Siphiwe Sibeko and Constable Thapelo Tlomatsane, who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Both officers served in the Gauteng Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, a specialized division tasked with dismantling organized crime networks. They were killed the previous Saturday after responding to reports of a shooting involving two cousins in Reiger Park.

Top Officials Pay Final Respects

Deputy Police Minister Dr. Polly Boshielo led a delegation of high-ranking officials at The Assemblies of Christ church. The service was attended by Major General Fred Kekana and representatives from the South African National Defence Force and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department.

Commanding officers and grieving family members remembered the two constables as heroes who faced high-risk environments to ensure public safety. The exact details surrounding the ambush that claimed their lives remain under investigation.

A Community Under Siege

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia recently visited the Reiger Park community following the tragedy. He emphasized that the fight against drug trafficking and gang violence is a collective responsibility, urging residents not to rely solely on law enforcement.

Cachalia noted that pointing fingers at the police would not solve the deep-rooted issues of addiction and crime. He called for a united front between the public and the authorities to reclaim the streets from criminal elements.

Suspect Appears in Court

Progress has been made in the criminal investigation, with 23-year-old Regan Collins appearing in the Boksburg Magistrates Court on the same day as the memorial. The suspect faces four counts of murder, linked to the deaths of the two officers and two women.

Investigations reveal that Collins is a known gangster who was out on bail at the time of the killings. Despite his history of serious charges, including multiple counts of murder and attempted murder, he had no prior convictions before this latest arrest.
