SAPS finds R1.1 million hidden in shoe boxes in Ford Ranger Raptor on N3, three men arrested

What started as a routine follow-up operation for Gauteng Counter Intelligence Operations (GCI-OPS) ended in a massive financial bust on the N3 highway. Officers intercepted a Ford Ranger Raptor near the Tugela Plaza on Friday, 14 August 2026.

Initial reports suggested the vehicle might be transporting narcotics, but a thorough search revealed a different kind of contraband. Tucked away inside the bakkie were several shoe boxes containing more than R1.1 million in cold hard cash.

The Bribery Trap

The 42-year-old driver was unable to explain where the massive sum of money came from, leading to his immediate detention. In addition to the cash, police confiscated a laptop, a cellphone, and a private firearm found in the vehicle.

While in custody, the suspect allegedly attempted to buy his freedom by offering the investigating officer a bribe. This prompted police to launch a swift sting operation to catch those attempting to interfere with the legal process.

The entrapment operation was successful, resulting in the arrest of two more individuals. The pair allegedly offered R200,000 to the police to secure the release of the primary suspect and the return of the seized Ford Ranger.

Court Appearances

Following the failed bribe, the authorities seized the R200,000 and the VW Amarok used by the two accomplices. All three men now face serious charges related to money laundering and corruption.

The two men involved in the bribery attempt have already appeared before the Alexandra Magistrate's Court. The 42-year-old driver is scheduled to face the Ladysmith Magistrate's Court in a separate proceeding.
