Ramaphosa warns SADC cannot preach integration while practicing exclusion on streets

President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent a stern message to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), warning that the region's dreams of integration are at risk. Speaking at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, he noted that the bloc cannot promote unity in boardrooms while exclusion takes place on the streets.

The President’s lecture comes just days before the 46th SADC Ordinary Summit. He argued that the tensions surrounding undocumented migration are a shared regional struggle rather than a problem unique to South Africa.

A Debt of Gratitude

Ramaphosa reminded the audience that South Africa’s freedom from apartheid was a collective victory achieved with the help of its neighbors. He emphasized that the people of the region are shaped by centuries of movement across borders, making solidarity a historical necessity.

He urged member states to focus on the root causes of social tension, such as inequality and a lack of economic opportunity. According to the President, these factors, rather than the movement of people, are what drive community vulnerabilities.

Call for Trade and Education Reform

To strengthen the bloc, the President called for a total overhaul of trade structures and the removal of barriers that hinder regional business. He believes an industrial transformation is the only way to reduce economic dependence across Southern Africa.

KZN Premier Thami Ntuli supported this vision, suggesting that regional history should be taught in schools. He proposed student exchange programs between cities like Durban, Harare, and Windhoek to foster a better understanding between the youth of different nations.

Political Support and Vision 2050

International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola echoed these sentiments, stating that the SADC Vision 2050 must deliver real results for citizens. He called for a peaceful and industrialized region where prosperity is shared by all.
