Reservoir Hills man shot dead in garage hijacking, community calls for street patrols

A quiet night in Reservoir Hills turned into a tragedy when a local man was followed into his Battersea Avenue property by armed attackers. The victim was shot inside his garage on the evening of 12 August 2026, as the assailants fled the scene in his vehicle.

Neighbours who heard the gunfire rushed to the scene to assist the wounded man. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but medical staff were unable to save him, and he later died from his injuries.

Calls for Community Mobilisation

Lee Maharajh, spokesperson for the Reservoir Hills Community Police Subforum, has issued a stern wake-up call to residents. He argued that the community can no longer rely solely on the police or private security firms to keep them safe.

Maharajh is pushing for locals to join organised street patrols to bolster existing security measures. He also appealed to the South African Police Service to ramp up visible policing and conduct more frequent stop-and-search operations in the precinct.

Although the stolen car was eventually tracked down and recovered in a Clermont cemetery by a joint task force of private security and community members, Maharajh noted that finding the vehicle does not make up for the loss of a life.

The State of Carjacking in KZN

This fatal shooting comes at a time when national carjacking figures are showing a downward trend compared to previous years. SAPS statistics for the early months of 2026 recorded just over 3,600 incidents across the country, a significant drop from the 5,400 cases seen in 2022.

Despite the national decline, KwaZulu-Natal remains a hotspot for vehicle crime, recording 446 hijackings in the first quarter of the year. The Umlazi precinct continues to be one of the most affected areas in the province.

Residents have been advised to remain highly vigilant when entering their properties. The local subforum insists that cooperation between neighbours and established security structures is the only way to prevent further violent crimes in the suburb.
