Reiger Park shooting: Families believe cousins were deliberately targeted

What was meant to be a weekend of celebration turned into a bloodbath in Reiger Park, Boksburg, on Friday night. Two cousins, Jaydin Magerman and Rolene Lessing, were gunned down at point-blank range while running a simple errand.

The pair had left their grandmother’s home to purchase firewood from a nearby shop. Their bodies were discovered inside a vehicle just 50 metres away from the store, ending the family's plans to celebrate Jaydin’s recent birthday.

Evidence of a Calculated Ambush

Family spokesperson Chris Landsberg has labeled the incident an "execution," claiming the attackers waited specifically for both women to be together. The deliberate nature of the shooting has left the relatives demanding urgent answers from law enforcement.

The tragedy escalated rapidly when members of the Anti-Gang Unit arrived at the scene. Constables Thapelo Tlomstane and Sphiwe Sieko were both fatally shot by gunmen while attempting to respond to the initial report of the women's deaths.

High-Level Investigation Underway

Acting Police Minister Faiez Cacalia visited the Boksburg area following the four murders to address the rising tide of violence. Authorities confirmed that a known gang leader has been taken in for questioning as part of the ongoing probe.

Police have made a significant breakthrough by recovering firearms linked to the massacre. The weapons were located in Duka Thole, a township near Germiston, during a massive manhunt for the suspects involved in the ambush.

As the investigation continues, the Reiger Park community remains on edge. The double loss of the cousins and the two dedicated officers has intensified calls for a permanent crackdown on gang activity in the region.
