Reiger Park murders: Police probe possible gang initiation motive behind killing of AGU officers

The South African Police Service is currently exploring a chilling theory behind the recent bloodshed in Reiger Park. Investigators believe the fatal shooting of two Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) members might have been a calculated move by a suspect seeking to rise through the ranks of a local criminal syndicate.

A Deadly Ambush

Constables Thapelo Tlomatsana, 29, and Sphiwe Sibeko, 28, were responding to a shooting call on August 7 when they were allegedly lured into a trap. Reports suggest someone flagged the officers down with a torch, providing a distraction that allowed an armed man to approach the vehicle and open fire.

Both officers sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their upper bodies during the surprise attack. The precision of the hit has led police to suspect the person who flagged them down was a deliberate decoy.

The Suspect and the Vatos Locos Connection

Regan Collins, 23, appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on August 12 to face four counts of murder. In addition to the two fallen constables, Collins is accused of killing two civilian women, Jaydin Magerman and Rolene Lessing.

Criminal profiling has linked Collins to the Vatos Locos gang. A source close to the investigation revealed that authorities are now checking if these specific killings served as an initiation or a 'promotion' ritual within the gang's hierarchy.

Investigation Continues

While the gang initiation theory is a primary focus for the SAPS, officials have cautioned that a motive has not been formally confirmed. The investigation remains active as they piece together the events leading to the quadruple homicide.
