Inanda Man dies after attackers loot spaza shop, assault worker; family questions police response

The eMachobeni community in Inanda is mourning the loss of a local businessman, identified as Mr Mageza, who died following a calculated attack at one of his tuckshops. The incident, which occurred on August 8, 2026, has sent shockwaves through the KwaZulu-Natal region.

Mageza, a reported member of the March and March movement, was performing his nightly routine of collecting female employees from his various shops when he was ambushed. He had already picked up one worker and was arriving at a second location when the violence erupted.

A Brutal Ambush

A gang of men targeted the second shop, physically assaulting a female worker by throwing her to the ground and beating her. The attackers then forcibly removed Mageza from his car, dragging him into the street where he was struck repeatedly and held at gunpoint.

Under extreme duress, the worker handed over the keys, allowing the group to loot the premises and rob everyone present. Amidst the chaos, gunshots were fired, resulting in an injury to a child and the fatal wounding of Mageza, though the attackers strangely left his car keys behind.

Family Slams Police Response

The victim's family has expressed deep frustration with the South African Police Service. A spokesperson noted that while detectives visited the scene and located a spent casing, their overall handling of the investigation has been described as ineffective.

The family is calling for a more professional approach to the case, highlighting a perceived difference in quality between the detectives assigned and the standard patrol officers usually seen in Inanda.

Protection Fee Suspicions

While official motives have not been confirmed by law enforcement, social media reports have suggested the attack might be linked to extortion rackets. There is speculation that the violence was a response to a refusal to pay so-called 'protection fees'.
