Hawks bust Nigerian drug kingpin linked to R4.5 million cocaine bust at OR Tambo

The Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit has successfully tracked down a 56-year-old Nigerian national accused of running a sophisticated drug and human trafficking operation. The suspect was apprehended at a lodge in Kempton Park on Thursday, 13 August 2026, following a lengthy probe into local smuggling rings.

Authorities have charged the man under both the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act and the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough for East Rand investigators who have been piecing together a syndicate operating out of the Gauteng hub.

The OR Tambo Connection

The investigation gained momentum in March 2026 when five South African women were stopped at OR Tambo International Airport. The group was allegedly preparing to board a flight to Japan while carrying 11.40kg of cocaine hidden in their luggage.

The seized narcotics were estimated to have a street value of approximately R4.5 million. The women—identified as Zodwa Patience Mthombeni, Nomagcisa Dayimane, Precious Nemukondeni Mulweli, Thule Shikwambane, and Vuyokazi Toko—were reportedly recruited as mules by the suspect now in custody.

Court Appearance and Related Crackdowns

The accused kingpin is scheduled to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate Court on Monday, 17 August 2026. This arrest is part of a broader intensification of drug-related enforcement across South Africa's major provinces.

In a separate incident in Durban, police recently raided a Lamontville property and seized drugs and manufacturing equipment worth R440,000. Another intelligence-driven operation near Nelspruit resulted in the recovery of R250,000 worth of cocaine from a 57-year-old suspect in Matafeni.

Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert as they continue to dismantle networks that exploit South Africans for international smuggling. The Hawks are expected to reveal more details as the case against the Kempton Park suspect proceeds.
