Goodwood Prison warden arrested after cops find drugs and 23 cellphones in his car

Authorities in the Western Cape have dealt a significant blow to the suspected smuggling of illicit goods into correctional facilities. A 47-year-old warden from Goodwood Prison was intercepted by the South African Police Service Anti-Gang Unit during a targeted roadblock.

The routine stop escalated quickly when officers decided to conduct a thorough search of the official's vehicle. The contents uncovered inside the car left police shocked by the sheer volume of prohibited items being transported.

A Cache of Contraband

Police seized a substantial amount of narcotics, including 600 Mandrax tablets and 100 grams of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as tik. The search also yielded 300 grams of dagga, indicating a diverse range of substances.

It wasn't just drugs found in the warden's possession. Officers recovered 23 cellphones, along with a supply of condoms and sexual enhancement tablets. These items are frequently flagged as high-value contraband within the South African prison system.

Security Under Fire

The arrest highlights ongoing concerns regarding the involvement of prison staff in smuggling operations. The presence of communication devices and narcotics in an official's car raises red flags about security breaches at the Goodwood facility.

The warden remains in custody as investigations continue. While formal charges are pending, the Department of Correctional Services is facing renewed pressure to address the flow of illegal goods into its centers.

Wider Crackdown on Corruption

This incident follows a series of recent raids and arrests involving prison staff across the country. Just recently, the Hawks took another official into custody for an alleged murder plot against senior management in the Eastern Cape.

National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale has previously led unannounced raids at facilities like Westville Prison to root out similar issues. The department continues to vow a zero-tolerance approach to employees who compromise the safety of the state's detention centers.
