SADC Summit: Three foreign nationals arrested for allegedly trying to gain unauthorised entry

The 46th Ordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit in Durban faced a security scare after three foreign nationals were apprehended for trying to gain illegal access to the venue. The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) confirmed the arrests took place at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC).

Fake Credentials and False Identities

On Saturday, 15 August 2026, security personnel flagged two Congolese nationals at a primary access-control point. The pair allegedly presented official accreditation tags that had not been issued to them, leading to an immediate investigation into how they obtained the documents.

Both individuals were taken into custody on the spot. They now face a range of legal charges including fraud, impersonation, and violating the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act, which governs unauthorized entry into restricted zones.

Artist Persona Ruse Fails

In a separate incident prior to the Congolese arrests, a Zimbabwean national was detained for a different deception. The individual allegedly attempted to secure summit credentials by falsely claiming to be a performing artist scheduled for the event.

Beyond the attempt to breach the summit venue, this suspect faces additional legal trouble. Authorities confirmed the individual is also being charged for being in South Africa illegally.

Strict Security Warnings Issued

NATJOINTS has issued a stern reminder that security at the Durban ICC remains watertight. They warned that sharing, lending, or falsifying accreditation is a serious offense that will result in immediate prosecution.

The arrests come at a sensitive time as President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed SADC leaders on regional cooperation. During his speech, the President notably condemned the poor treatment of foreign nationals following recent demonstrations that have sparked international concern.

Law enforcement officials maintain that only individuals with verified and properly issued clearance will be allowed near the summit proceedings as the event continues under high-alert monitoring.
