London restricted highly polluting cars. Children’s lungs are getting healthier, study suggests
A landmark study shows that restricting high-pollution vehicles has significantly boosted respiratory health for thousands of city kids.
The controversial decision to charge polluting vehicles for entering London appears to be paying off for the next generation. A team led by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) has found a strong link between the city’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and a marked improvement in children’s lung development.
Before the zone was introduced in 2019, London’s children suffered from significantly smaller lung capacities compared to those in less congested areas. Now, researchers say the air quality improvements have allowed their lungs to grow at a healthier rate, reversing previous damage caused by toxic traffic fumes.
Comparing London to Luton
The study followed 3,400 students aged six to nine across 84 schools in London and the town of Luton. Luton served as a control group, as it has similar traffic levels but did not implement the strict daily fees for older vehicles.
The results were definitive: the number of children in London with clinically impaired lung function dropped from 14% to 9%. Over the five-year tracking period, London children saw their lung health recover to levels similar to their peers in cleaner environments.
A Tough Political Battle
London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who faced intense political backlash for the £12.50 ($17) daily charge, recently described the policy as his "hardest decision." He noted that while critics turned the health measure into a "culture war," the data now proves the children are the real winners.
Experts warn that stunted lung growth in childhood is a ticking time bomb. It significantly increases the risk of developing asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cardiovascular issues in adulthood.
Global Implications
“Air pollution is a global issue,” stated Ian Mudway, a senior author from Imperial College London. He emphasized that the data proves clean air zones are effective public health tools for protecting developing bodies in high-traffic cities.
While some outside statisticians noted that factors like the COVID-19 pandemic might have also lowered pollution, they admitted the findings are striking. The research, published in The Lancet Public Health, serves as a blueprint for cities worldwide looking to combat urban smog.
