New research published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that people working in the skies are at a significantly higher risk of dying from radiation-related cancers. The findings indicate that pilots and flight attendants face greater danger than even those who work directly with radioactive materials on the ground.

The primary culprit is cosmic radiation, which originates in space. While the Earth's atmosphere shields those on the ground, exposure levels spike at high altitudes, placing frequent flyers and aircrews in a vulnerable position.

Data From Millions of Records

Researchers analyzed national data from over 12 million death certificates, spanning 500 different occupations. They focused specifically on cancers known to be influenced by radiation, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and malignancies of the breast, thyroid, and skin.

Flight attendants topped the list for the highest percentage of radiation-related cancer deaths, with pilots following closely in second place. According to the study, flight attendants have roughly 50% higher odds of dying from these specific cancers compared to the average worker.

Dr. Vishal Patel of Harvard Medical School noted that approximately 1 in 14 flight attendant deaths were linked to these cancers. For pilots, the figure stood at 6.7%, while the general working population sat at just 5%.

Workplace Risks and Lack of Oversight

The study highlights a gap in safety regulations. While the Federal Aviation Administration recognizes that crews are exposed to ionizing radiation, there are currently no federal limits on doses or requirements for monitoring exposure levels.

Patel emphasized the danger of this lack of data, stating, "You can’t manage an exposure you’ve decided not to measure." Union leaders have also weighed in, arguing that the risks are well-known but that crews are rarely educated on how to protect themselves.

Recommendations for Aircrews

Beyond radiation, experts noted that disrupted sleep cycles and jet lag could also contribute to cancer risks for airline employees. These lifestyle factors, combined with high-altitude exposure, create a complex health environment for aviation professionals.

Medical experts now suggest that pilots and cabin crew should undergo more frequent health screenings. This includes regular skin checks and earlier mammograms for women to catch potential issues as soon as they arise.
