Virginia State University Shooting: What Happened & What We Know

Virginia State University students returning for the fall semester faced a terrifying start to the year when gunfire erupted near the Quad Annexes. The shooting, which occurred in the early hours of August 15, 2026, left five people wounded and forced the Ettrick campus into an immediate lockdown.

Emergency responders arrived at the residence halls shortly after 1:30 a.m. to find victims suffering from various gunshot injuries. While the lockdown was lifted later that morning, the community remained on edge as investigators determined the incident was not a drive-by and began a manhunt for those responsible.

The Victims and the Aftermath

The five victims involved in the shooting are aged between 17 and 23. Among them, a 21-year-old man remains in critical condition. Authorities confirmed that only one of the injured individuals is currently enrolled as a student at the university.

The 20-year-old student has already been discharged from medical care after being treated for non-life-threatening wounds. Police have withheld the identities of all victims while the investigation into the motives behind the violence continues.

Suspect Found Hiding in Dormitory

Following a 14-hour search, law enforcement located 19-year-old Camron Harris hiding inside a closet in Seward Hall. Harris, who is not a student at the institution, was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Chesterfield County Jail.

The suspect now faces eight felony counts, including four charges of malicious wounding and four charges related to the use of a firearm. He is currently being held without bond, and authorities suggested that more charges could be filed as the case develops.

A Community in Recovery

The violence cast a shadow over what was supposed to be a celebratory week, coming just days after the university welcomed 1,500 new students. The VSU Police and Chesterfield County officers are receiving assistance from the ATF and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to finalize the investigation.
