Tshwane officer and attorney wife arrested for laundering R3 million from deceased estates

Authorities in Limpopo have apprehended a Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) officer and his attorney spouse in connection with a major financial fraud scheme. The duo allegedly misappropriated over R3 million from two different deceased estates.

Peter Nonyane and Charlotte Tibana were taken into custody in separate operations in Pretoria and Polokwane. The couple has already appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court, where they remain behind bars awaiting their formal bail application.

Suspicious Luxury Car Purchase

The alleged scheme began to unravel when Nonyane attempted to buy a high-end Mercedes-Benz AMG G63. Staff at a Pretoria dealership became wary when the officer could not provide a legitimate explanation for the origin of the R1.65 million payment.

Following the dealership's report, the Hawks launched an investigation that led directly to Tibana. The National Prosecuting Authority alleges that Tibana, serving as the executor for the estates, abused her position to facilitate illegal transfers.

Financial records show that R1.75 million was moved from one estate account alone. In late October, these funds were reportedly funneled through a commercial bank account before being used to settle the car dealership's invoice and an additional R100,000 payment.

Disciplinary Action and State Stance

The TMPD has confirmed that internal disciplinary processes against Nonyane are now underway. The department is currently weighing a formal suspension as the criminal trial proceeds in the background.

NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi emphasized that this case highlights the critical need for inter-agency cooperation. The state remains committed to protecting vulnerable beneficiaries from the very professionals appointed to safeguard their inheritance.

This arrest follows a trend of heightened scrutiny regarding estate fraud in South Africa. Law enforcement continues to target white-collar crime within the legal profession to restore public trust in the administration of justice.
