Off-duty SAPS constable kidnapped and blindfolded during Gqeberha guesthouse robbery
A South African Police Service constable was abducted and later released after armed robbers discovered his identity during a room-by-room raid in Mount Croix.

Authorities in the Eastern Cape have launched a massive manhunt following a brazen late-night robbery and kidnapping at a Mount Croix guesthouse. An off-duty SAPS constable was targeted by a trio of armed men during the incident on 17 August 2026.
The suspects stormed the Buckingham Road premises at approximately 23:30. After failing to find cash on the property, the group moved through the building, systematically looting personal belongings from tenants and stealing at least one television.
Targeted Abduction
The nature of the crime changed drastically when the robbers entered the room of the off-duty officer. Once they identified him as a member of the police service, the assailants seized his personal items, bound him, and blindfolded him.
The officer was then forced into the suspects' getaway vehicle and driven away from the scene. Fortunately, he was later released without sustaining physical injuries and is now receiving professional support to recover from the trauma.
Investigation Underway
Eastern Cape police management has praised the constable for his bravery and for maintaining his composure under extreme pressure. A dedicated investigative team is now working to determine the exact motive behind the kidnapping.
Detectives are particularly focused on why the suspects chose to abduct the officer after realizing his occupation. No arrests have been made yet, and the three men remain at large.
Law enforcement is urging anyone with information regarding the suspects or the getaway vehicle to come forward. Tips can be shared anonymously via Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or at any local police station.
