Fatal showdown: Tweeling suspect accused of killing ex-girlfriend dies in gunfight with SAPS
A 40-year-old man who allegedly executed his ex-girlfriend in the street was killed after opening fire on SAPS officers.

A manhunt in the Free State concluded in a hail of bullets on 18 August 2026, leaving both a murder suspect and his victim dead. The violent sequence of events began when a 36-year-old woman was targeted by her former partner after finishing her work shift in Reitz.
Authorities report that the victim unknowingly entered a white vehicle where the 40-year-old suspect was lying in wait. The situation turned fatal when she exited the car on 10th Street in Tweeling, where the man allegedly grabbed her and delivered a single, lethal gunshot to the head.
The Deceptive Pursuit
Following the broad-daylight execution, the suspect fled back toward Reitz, prompting a rapid response from local law enforcement. Members of the community provided crucial tips that allowed the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit to intercept him.
In a strategic move, plainclothes FCS officers in a Mahindra vehicle approached the suspect while he was attempting to hitchhike. The man, seemingly unaware that he was flagging down the police, walked toward the car just as a second, marked police unit arrived on the scene.
Fatal Exchange of Fire
Realizing he was trapped, the suspect pulled a firearm and began shooting at the uniformed officers. The plainclothes members in the Mahindra immediately returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect during the brief but intense shootout.
Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia praised the public for their quick thinking in reporting the suspect's movements. While a murder case was opened for the woman's death, a separate inquest docket has been registered to probe the shooting of the suspect.
As per standard legal procedure, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will now lead the investigation into the conduct of the officers involved in the fatal confrontation.
