De Hoop farm shooting: Police find ‘Enemies of the Boer’ journal after suspect is killed
Police discovered a 'hit list' journal and an apartheid-era flag following a deadly standoff on a De Hoop farm.

Western Cape authorities are digging into the background of a 40-year-old man who was killed during a fierce gunfight with police on Monday, 17 August 2026. The confrontation took place at a farm in the De Hoop area, near Robertson, leaving one police officer hospitalized with a gunshot wound.
While the suspect's identity remains under wraps as officials search for his next of kin, the items recovered from the scene have shifted the focus of the investigation toward potential domestic extremism.
Discovery of a 'Hit List' Journal
During a sweep of the property, investigators found an old South African flag and a handwritten notebook with the chilling title, "The Enemies of the Boer." The contents of the diary have been described by senior police leadership as deeply alarming.
Bongani Maqhashalala, the Provincial Deputy Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, revealed that the journal includes a detailed list of high-profile South Africans. The author of the notes allegedly labeled these individuals as enemies of the white race who required "dealing with."
Widening the Net
SAPS is currently withholding the names found in the journal to prevent widespread panic. The list reportedly features people living in various provinces across the country, suggesting the suspect's interests were not limited to the Western Cape.
Detectives are now working to determine if the deceased gunman was a 'lone wolf' or if he belonged to a larger organized extremist cell. The discovery of the journal is being treated as a major lead in tracing the suspect’s ideological roots.
The injured officer is currently in stable condition and recovering from the shootout. Meanwhile, the investigation continues as police attempt to map out the extent of the threat posed by the suspect's alleged network.
