“Completely unacceptable”: KZN nurse suspended after viral video shows patient alleged assault
Health officials have sidelined a medical worker after footage surfaced showing a physical altercation inside a public ward.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has taken swift action against a staff member at King Dinuzulu Hospital. The nurse was placed on precautionary suspension this week following the release of a disturbing video on social media.
The footage, which gained significant traction on X, shows the nurse engaged in a verbal exchange with a patient while standing next to their bed. The situation escalated into a physical assault before the nurse moved toward another person in the ward.
Government Response and Zero Tolerance
Health authorities described the behavior depicted in the video as a direct violation of the ethical standards required of public healthcare employees. They labeled the conduct as "completely unacceptable" in light of the department's core values.
The department confirmed that a full internal probe is currently underway. Officials emphasized that the investigation is being handled as a matter of extreme urgency to ensure accountability.
According to the department, every citizen using public health facilities is entitled to dignified treatment. They warned that if the investigation confirms the allegations, formal disciplinary measures will be implemented immediately.
Growing Concerns Over Public Healthcare
The incident has ignited a wider debate online regarding the safety of vulnerable patients in state-run hospitals. Many social media users expressed concern that such behavior might be symptomatic of deeper issues within the system.
This case follows other recent reports of misconduct in the sector. These include calls for investigations into the death of Lydia Makhoba in Mpumalanga and the recent arrest of a doctor in Newcastle for alleged sexual assault.
For now, the KZN Health Department maintains that it will not tolerate any form of patient abuse. The suspended nurse will remain off duty until the formal inquiry reaches a conclusion.
