During his recent performance in Phoenix, the 77-year-old icon took a moment to address the current state of R&B stadium tours, specifically pointing out the massive run currently shared by Usher and Chris Brown.

Richie suggested that while the two stars might think they are breaking new ground, he and his peers were the original architects of the format. He pointed to his own history with the Commodores and Earth, Wind & Fire as proof that joint R&B spectacles have been around for decades.

A Sharp Jab at Legal History

The joke took a sharper turn when Richie highlighted the lifestyle differences between the generations. "Commodores and Earth, Wind & Fire, we were doing that back 40 years ago. Only difference is, between then and now, we didn’t go to jail!" he told the crowd at the Mortgage Matchup Center.
