AFASA calls on government to declare Free State cattle deaths a disaster

The agricultural sector in the Free State is reeling after extreme weather conditions resulted in the deaths of more than 500 cattle. The African Farmers' Association of South Africa (AFASA) is now putting pressure on the government to officially declare the situation a provincial disaster.

Last week’s arrival of heavy rain and uncharacteristic snowfall across the Fezile Dabi District Municipality proved fatal for local herds. Farming communities are currently grappling with the economic fallout of these widespread losses.

A Growing Crisis in Heilbron

Piet Mothepu, the head of AFASA's Land Reform Committee, has labeled the event a tragedy that requires a swift official response. Speaking during a relief event in Heilbron, he explained that the current scale of damage is too great for local farmers to manage alone.

AFASA argues that a formal disaster declaration is the only way to unlock necessary government resources. This funding would be critical in helping agricultural communities recover and rebuild their livelihoods following the shock of the cold front.

Immediate Relief Efforts

While waiting for a state response, the association has launched a three-day support programme to assist struggling producers. They are currently distributing livestock supplements to help strengthen the remaining animals and prevent further fatalities.

This short-term intervention aims to stabilize operations while the organization continues its advocacy for long-term aid. The emotional and financial toll on farmers has sparked a massive public reaction, as many South Africans call for better protection for the country's livestock during volatile weather seasons.
